RICHMOND, VA – 7 DAY CAMP

June 18-24 and August 13-19, 2017

vcu-dance-centerThese intensives are 7 days long, with the final day being a half day. Classes are held in the charming, spacious studios of Virginia Commonwealth University and the vibe is urban. With lively neighborhoods and a thriving restaurant scene, Richmond is a wonderful place to experience. If you prefer a smaller crowd, come to the June camp. Both of the Richmond camps provide a performance opportunity; the enormous VCU space transforms into a perfect theater for our show. We will send you home with the online performance video and camp photo.

We have a wonderful group of experienced instructors that differs for each camp. A list second_web_room_heidi_smallfor your camp will be provided in your Welcome Packet. Class size varies, but is usually about 15 students per level. Daily transportation between the hotel and the studios will be provided and reserved on site-parking is available. Lunch is provided each day.

Exclusively at the June camp in Richmond, we offer Level 1- Beginning, a special program designed to explore the fundamentals in depth such as turn out, carriage of the arms, positions of the body, class etiquette, and point preparedness. There is also an opportunity to learn and perform a simplified variation.

Program Options

5 hours per day

Morning classes include Elemental Body Alignment System, ballet technique, pointe, men’s technique, pirouettes, and men’s or women’s variations. There are also three afternoon workshops to help you integrate concepts into your technique. Workshop topics vary each year. On Friday, you’ll have the option to perform a variation from class. There is an option to add the Performance class or Pas de Deux classes to this curriculum on your application.

In addition to everything included in the Short Day, you will take a daily repertory class, two pas de deux classes, a character class, and an additional pointe class or men’s class. You will learn three pieces for the performance; a variation, a group piece and a pas de deux piece.

Lodging

We work with two local hotels to provide you the best rates and locations available. For June 18-24 and August 7-11 the Crowne Plaza Hotel, at 555 East Canal Street, Richmond VA (804) 788-0900 offers a special nightly rate of $109 + tax per double room and $119 + tax per suite. For August 13-19 the Crowne Plaza Hotel offers a special nightly rate of $100 + tax per double room and $109 + tax per suite. This includes a refrigerator and is available for single or double occupancy. Self parking is available onsite for $10 per day. There is free downtown shuttle service available for guests, and the hotel is within walking distance of the studios. The Holiday Inn Express at 201 East Cary St., Richmond, VA 23219, (804) 788-1600 offers a group rate of $109 plus tax for standard king or double rooms, and $119 plus tax for suites. Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations 30 days in advance to guarantee a room at the group rate. Upon acceptance, roommate connection services will be available through Sun King Dance directly.

Lunch

Our caterer, Panera Bread, offers a nice selection of box lunches, including vegetarian, low carb and vegan choices. Lunch is included with your tuition.

Getting to Camp

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is 15 minutes from the hotels. Taxis from the airport are readily available and Uber operates locally. Washington DC’s Reagan and Dulles airports are about 2 to 2.5 hours away. A car is not necessary to enjoy your stay, but it is an added freedom. Richmond is a historic destination, home to numerous museums and Civil War sites. There is also a vibrant restaurant, art and music scene. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and Charlottesville are nearby cities of interest.
